HEAT TREATMENT

These are information about heat treatment of rivets. After these process, the strength of rivet can be enforced.


ICE BOX RIVETS

• Nickname given to rivets made of alloy 2017T4 more than 3/16 inch diameter and alloy 2024T4.
• These alloys are too hard to drive.
• Must be reheat treated and kept in a frozen condition.

HEAT TREATING

1. When these alloys are heat treated , they harden after cooling down.
2. Due to age hardening process
3. Brings the metal to maximum natural hardness.
4. Stored in freezer.
5. The rivet is quenched.
6. Put into specified containers.

TEMPER DESIGNATION

• 2024 alloys are followed by temper designation
• Made up of letter and number
• Eg ; 

         2024T3

      T4 = solution heat treated and age hardened
      T3 = solution heat treated, age hardened and then cold worked

• 2024T31 icebox rivets is considered the strongest alloy.
