SOLID RIVETS

In this page, it is about solid rivets. Solid rivets are the most commonly used in the construction of aircraft. In the below, you guys and girls can find more details about them.

AIRCRAFT SOLID SHANK RIVETS

  1. Consist of a manufactured head,a shank and a driven head.
  2. Solid shank rivets are the most commonly used fastener in aviation today.
  3. When a solid shank rivet is driven or installed in a hole, several things change:
  • Diameter of the rivets shank increases
  • Bearing strength increases
  • Shear strength increases
  • Solid rivets are identified by their:
  • Head shape
  • Material from which they are manufactured
  • Size

RIVET ALLOYS
  1. Rivets used in aircraft construction is strong but much lighter than steel.
  2. Alloying aluminium with other metals such as copper, magnesium and zinc and then heat treating the metal makes this increase in strength possible.
  3. Alloyed aluminium rivets are heat treated and allowed to cool and age hardened.
  4. The alloy 2117T4 are more corrosion resistant and crack free than any of the copper bearing alluminium alloys which developed by Alcoa.

APPLICATION OF RIVET ALLOYS IN AVIATION
  1. Light aircraft use magnesium alloy for control surfaces
  2. Alloy 2117T4 are used for plugging holes on wet wing fuel tank
  3. Alloy 2024T4 produced as skin and rivets.

DETERMINE THE LENGTH OF RIVET

The rivets length can be determined with the following formula:
  • Rivet Length = Material Thickness + (3/2 X Rivet Diameter)

Figure 4: The Dimension of Rivet Length

Let me give you an EXAMPLE,

RIVET LENGTH

= 8/16
=1/2

RIVET DIAMETER

= 5/32

In the last, how to get MATERIAL THICKNESS ???

Rivet Length=Material Thickness + (3/2 X Rivet Diameter)

½ = MATERIAL THICKNESS + (3/2 X 5/32)

MATERIAL THICKNESS = 17/64 INCH
